A Healthy Handshake

Today, maybe more than any other time, we are finding out how important it is to take care of ourselves. A little bit of pampering can help relive stress and do wonders for our self esteem, creating a healthy and better you. It is necessary in this busy world to put our best foot forward, or should I say best hand? Research shows that the nail cuticles can reveal the condition of your health. The cuticles are the small folds of the thickened skin at the base of the nails. Cuticles act as a protective wall to defend our bodies from bacteria and other harmful microorganisms. Therefore it is essential that we take the utmost care of our cuticles.

Since the hands and legs are the parts of the body most affected by external pollutants, the nails have to be adequately taken care of. As a preventative measure, do not cut the cuticle while trimming your nails. Proper trimming of the nails consists of removing dead skin and dry layers. It is always better to do not enough than too much. You can always go back for more. Be gentle on yourself.

There are some problems that can occur with poor cuticle care. With the introduction of synthetic nails, such as acrylics, many people have experienced irritation. If you have sensitive skin, using these types of synthetic ingredients can cause blisters on the skin and further damage the nail and cuticle. However, there are many products available today like Qtica Intense Cuticle Repair Cream to help correct and maintain healthy cuticles.

If you have experienced any darkening of the nails or other discoloration, it is possible that a fungal contamination may be present. Many of the harsh chemicals in every day cleaners can contribute to this very problem. Wearing gloves while cleaning is a great preventative method and makes it easy to avoid such a problem.

To steer clear of these unwanted experiences, it is vital that you take care of your cuticles. It is a simple process and requires a small amount of time. Remember to keep your hands moisturized and do not let them dry out. By applying the Qtica Solid Gold Anti-Bacterial Oil Gel to the cuticles after bathing, you can ensure your cuticles will be hydrated and free from infection. Try restricting the use of nail polish remover to once a week. When cuticle removal is necessary use an orange wood stick and a liquid or cream cuticle remover. Avoid using tools as they can damage that delicate skin. If you decide to visit a salon for your nail care make sure their instruments are sterile. By following these simple guidelines you will have perfectly trimmed healthy nails. You can be free from worry knowing that you'll make a great first impression with a healthy hand shake.

Overview of Dermalogica

Introduction:

Dermalogica was founded in 1986 by a British skin care therapist named Jane Wurwand. Jane wanted to create a skin care line that offered a wide range of products, using only the best ingredients. The products found in Dermalogica are free from lanolin, S.D. alcohol, formaldehyde, and artificial colors. Instead they use natural ingredients such as green clays, balm mint, exfoliating rice bran, lactic acid, salicylic acid, and fruit enzymes to ensure safe exfoliation and maximum hydration. Although Jane started out with the basics like Active Moist, Multi Active Toner, and Special Cleansing Gel, she quickly learned how to create skin care products to suit every skin type and condition. Now there are multiple cleansers, masques, moisturizers, and boosters to choose from. This simple but effective line delivers great results in minimal time.

Features:

One of the best features about Dermalogica is that it only uses natural ingredients free of artificial colors. It contains natural vegetable oils, aromatic plant oils, and silk proteins. To avoid false fragrance, many products use organic herbal extracts to stimulate the senses. If you have problematic skin, Dermalogica is still a great choice. It is non-comedogenic and uses naturally occurring astringents in place of harsh S.D. alcohol. All products are packaged in the most hygienic containers to ensure they are free of contamination.

Products:

Daily Resurfacer is one of the most popular products that Dermalogica carries. Once you use it, you'll understand why. Daily Resurfacer is designed to transform dull, lifeless skin into healthy, smooth, supple skin. Unlike other exfoliating products, Daily Resurfacer does not cause any redness or trauma to the skin. If you are experiencing redness, Soothing Protection Spray is a wonderful way to calm and soothe the skin. If excessive oil production is a problem for you, try using the skin purifying wipes. They remove excess oil and are great to use after a work out. They come in a convenient travel package so they are easy to throw into any gym bag or purse.

In addition to Daily Resurfacer, Dermalogica carries a lightening system called ChromaWhite-TRx, to help lighten and brighten the dark pigmented areas of your skin. The ChromaWhite line consists of six different products to suite your exact need. All six products contain ingredients that will lighten discoloration. This includes a cleanser, an exfoliant, a vitamin c treatment, a high potency treatment, a night treatment, and a moisturizer with SPF. The C-12 Concentrate is a silky rich, high potency treatment that decreases cellular discoloration. It contains oligopeptides to help decrease excess melanin production and a blend of mineral amino acids to prevent further hyper- pigmentation. It can be used twice daily and is the most effective at treating discoloration.

Lip Renewal Complex is another amazing product created by Dermalogica. By using lip renewal complex daily you can decrease contour lines and prevent signs of aging. One application will keep your lips feeling hydrated for hours on end. Include Dermalogica's Skin hydrating Masque into your skin care regime for extra facial hydration. This masque will re-hydrate dry, stressed skin reducing fine lines and wrinkles. It contains plant extract to help soothe and calm any skin irritation and promote suppleness.

Dermalogica provides it's customers with easy starter kits that contain all the necessary products for a healthy skin care regime. Each kit is customized to fit your skin type and condition. This takes the guessing out for you and makes it easy to start using new products.

No matter what your skin concerns may be, Dermalogica is sure to have the right regime for you. You can achieve beautiful skin with the right products. Try Dermalogica today and be on your way to healthy, glowing skin.

Tips for Ever Glowing Skin

No longer is radiant and healthy skin unattainable. It can be achieved with a little bit of care and the right products. This article will give you some tips to help you reach your goal and take basic steps to keeping your skin clear, hydrated, and beautiful.

Drink plenty of water and eat well:

Healthy skin can be a direct reflection of overall health. Keeping your body completely hydrated will ensure that your skin remains moisturized and radiant. Leafy green vegetables, fresh fruits, and whole grains all work together to provide essential nutrients for supple skin. If your skin tends to be oily, try to stay clear of foods with high oil content, like French fries and greasy hamburgers. This will only add to your body's already high oil supply and can have adverse affects.

Taking Care of your skin:

By creating a regular beauty routine you will be able to meet the needs of your ever changing skin. The proper regimen should always consist of a cleanser, toner, eye cream, moisturizer, and exfoliant. Be careful when choosing a cleanser. The strength of detergent in cleansers can vary. Using a cleanser that is too strong can lead to dryness and eventually create more fine lines and wrinkles. For dry skin, try a cream cleanser. These usually do not foam and are applied to a dry face and wiped off with a warm wet cloth. It might feel different at first if you are used to foam, but stick with it and you will see a dramatic improvement in the hydration of your skin. For oily skin a foaming cleanser might be just right, or even a clay cleanser.

Please, do not forget to tone!! Many people skip this step because they think it is not important. In reality it is one the most important steps. Toner helps to balance the skin's pH after cleansing. What does that mean? It means that many cleansers are great at removing dirt and makeup but in the process they strip the skin of its much needed natural oils and hydration. By using a toner you are restoring balance to your skin and preparing it for moisturizer. Usually this will allow you to use less moisturizer and provide a deeper product penetration. In addition toner has an antiseptic effect and can reduce the risk of infection and blemishes. If you are experiencing excess dryness or even breakout, try implementing a toner into your regime. If you have oily or acneic skin an astringent might be more appropriate for you.

One of the greatest tips for achieving youthful glowing skin is regular exfoliation. There are many different types of exfoliation and all will help to stimulate cellular turnover. There are physical exfoliants that contain granules, and chemical exfoliants which contain acids and enzymes. Be careful when choosing a granular exfoliant, or scrub. Some scrubs contain plastic pieces that are not perfectly round and can tear into delicate skin, causing scarring and irritation. Depending how strong the exfoliant is that you choose will determine how often you use it. Typically an exfoliant should be done about two to three times a week. There are some, such as Dermalogica's Daily Microfoliant, that are safe to use on a daily basis. If you desire a stronger granular exfoliant, Dr. Brandt's Microdermabrasion, is a wonderful choice. For an exfoliation similar to a chemical peel, try Murad's Intensive Resurfacing Peel. It contains glycolic and salicylic acid to stimulate cell proliferation. By removing dead skin cells through exfoliation you will reveal a softer, smoother texture as plump healthy skin cells rise to the surface.

Moisturize

Everyone needs a moisturizer. Yes, even oily skin. It seems clear why someone with dry skin would need a moisturizer, but what about oily skin? Technology has come a long way and now there are light weight moisturizers that even oily/acneic skin can benefit from. Healthy skin needs a proper balance of oil and water. Often times, oily skin is dehydrated. Meaning it is lacking water. When the skin is lacking water, the body recognizes it needs more moisture and will produce more oil. Moisturizers can provide the skin with this much needed water and will actually help to balance oil production. In addition, it will act as a protective barrier between your pores and bacteria, decreasing breakouts. Dermalogica's Oil control Lotion is a great product for this type of skin. If you are dry and dehydrated, try Yonka Crème 28. It is loaded with moisture and natural oils.

Protect your skin

Sun damage is one of the main causes of premature aging. This includes tanning beds. The rate of skin cancer has sky rocketed and it is no longer partial to the elder. Many young teens are being effected with this horrible disease due to a lack of education. The UV rays are stronger than ever and it is essential that we take up forces against the harmful effects of the sun. Sunscreen is a great way to protect your skin and your bodies from the sun. Many skin care companies now make daily moisturizers with SPF. Use at least an SPF 15. Anything under a 15 doesn't do much. However, you don't need to be crazy and buy an SPF 70 either. The higher the SPF the more chemicals it contains. For daily use SPF 15 is sufficient. When you are in the sun, step it up to SPF 30 or even 50. The most important thing is that you reapply. One application will not last you all day. Secondly, apply it every day, even if you think you're never outside. UV rays penetrate through glass and come in through windows when you're driving in your car or at the office working. Furthermore, please stay away from tanning beds. One session in a tanning bed is equivalent to five full days at the beach. It is hard on your body and can actually damage your DNA. If you must get that bronzy glow, try using self tanners like Tan Towels, or ModelCo. They give a warm sun kissed look without the harmful effects.

Reminder:

Following these steps will help you achieve healthy, beautiful skin. But remember, everyone's skin is different. What works for one person might not work for another. So don't give up. It may feel like you have tried everything on the market but I guarantee you, you haven't. Try again and eventually you will find the perfect regime for you. Your skin will thank you!

Steps to reduce the sign of aging

As we age it is inevitable that we will develop fine lines and wrinkles. However, good daily skin care maintenance can delay the process. There are many procedures that you can utilize to help you reduce the effects of aging, such as microderamabrasion, chemical peels, and laser resurfacing. Before deciding on an option, it is always best to be seen by an esthetician or dermatologist. They will be able to provide you with the advantages and disadvantages of each procedure so that you may make an informed decision.

One of the best ways to treat and prevent premature aging of the skin is through supplements. Many nutritional supplements contain antioxidants as well as other vitamins and minerals to help treat your skin from the inside out. This can help build collagen and elastin creating firming looking skin. Omega's are rich in essential fatty acids and can supply the skin with much needed hydration, giving it a soft, supple feel. Dr. Perricone has a wonderful supply of nutritional supplements, including DMAE to help tighten and firm the skin. Dr. Murad has a great supply of vitamins with benefits ranging from increased sun protection to cellulite treatments. Either of these options would be an excellent place to start. Remember to always consult a physician first.

Many of the external treatments deal with increasing the rate of cellular turnover. Our skin cells are "born" at the basal layer through a process known as mitosis. There are always new skin cells being born, forcing older skin cells to travel to the surface, creating many layers of cells. As the cell travels to the surface, it loses essential nutrients and hydration as it goes. Eventually the skin cell becomes dry and flat and will slough off the surface of the skin. This entire process takes healthy skin about 28 days and is called cellular turnover. As we age this process slows down decreasing the fullness of the skin. At the same time our elastin and collagen production slow down resulting in sagging skin. This is why it is so important that we take care of our skin with treatments to help stimulate cellular turnover.

Some of the treatments you can do to increase your skin's cellular turnover are:

  1. A rejuvenating facial- This includes deep cleansing techniques, massage for relaxation, and most importantly exfoliation for stimulation. In addition there are many serums and masques that can also be applied to help prevent or reduce the signs of aging.

  2. A chemical peel- Although these peels are extremely effective, they vary in strengths and can cause extreme dryness and irritation. Therefore it is important that you consult a dermatologist before hand and follow any instructions given for after care. Always wear a sunscreen after a chemical peel. The most common type is a glycolic peel. There can be some down time, so make sure you are prepared.

  3. Micordermabrasion- This is a fabulous solution to many skin care concerns. It can help reduce scarring, increase cellular turnover, and result in soft, glowing skin. This treatment can use circulating crystals or a diamond tip to basically scrape off excess dead skin cells. There is minimal to no down time.

  4. Laser Resurfacing- This should be a last resort. Although the effects can be phenomenal, it is the most invasive of all the procedures mentioned and can come with the most down time. You must consult a doctor before having laser resurfacing done. Make sure only a Doctor or RN performs the procedure. There are different types, so do your homework and chose the one that is right for you.

These are all viable options for decreasing the signs of aging. The best method is prevention. Take of your skin daily, stay out of the sun as much as possible, and always wear sunscreen. Drink plenty of water, eat well, and your skin will be happy you did.

How to Avert Dark Circles

One of the biggest cosmetic complaints today is under eye dark circles. Nine out ten people are inflicted with this problem at some point in their life. There are many causes to dark circles. Depending on what your dark circles are caused from will determine how to treat them.

Here are some of the most common reasons for dark under eye circles:
  1. Pigmentation- The pigment under the eyes may naturally be darker than the rest of the skin on the face. This tends to be the case with darker skin. The skin is healthy under the eyes; it just produces more melanin in that area.
  2. A shadow- People born with a high nose bridge and deep-set eyes can have shadows cast under their eyes that appear to be dark circles.
  3. Lack of sleep- Regularly not getting enough sleep can cause toxins to build up under the eyes resulting in puffiness and dark circles.
  4. Sickness- Often times when we are sick we will experience lack of sleep and toxin build up. This will usually subside after you are well.
  5. Iron deficiency- An iron deficiency, possible anemia, is a sign that not enough oxygen is getting to the body tissues. Schedule an appointment with your physician and try taking a good quality vitamin mineral supplement.
  6. Thin or aging skin- Thin skin can show visible blood vessels under the eyes that can appear to have a bluish tint or reddish tint.
  7. Smoking- Smoking produces more toxins in the body and inhibits our systems from working to their fullest potential. Best solution: Quit

Topical Treaments:

There are many treatments for dark circles. If your dark circles are caused from dark pigment, try using a topical eye cream with hydroquinone. Dr. Murad's Lighten and Brighten Eye Treatment is a good option. This will actually lighten the dark areas of skin under the eyes. Also try a good concealer with light reflectors, like Too Faced Mineral Water Eye Brightening Pencil. For treatment of dark circles due to thin or aging skin Hylexin is an excellent choice. It helps to strengthen the capillary matrix so the delicate skin in the orbital area is protected against further damage. A cream with vitamin K can also help build the capillary walls. Try DDF Nutrient K Plus.

Intrinsic and Extrinsic factors:

Be sure to eat plenty of food rich in eye-friendly nutrients: Beta-carotene, Vitamins A, C, E, and K, carotenes in red, yellow, and orange vegetables, and plant pigments in blueberries and bilberries. This will help to improve circulation and enhance your vision. Try to stay away from salty foods.

Dark circles can sometimes be a result of toxin buildup in the body and dehydration. Drinking plenty of water every day will help to flush toxins and excess sodium from your body. Relaxation can also aid you in alleviating your dark circles. Try doing Yoga or deep breathing techniques. Schedule regular facials and/or massages. This will help your body relax and stimulate your lymphatic system, keeping you healthy and your skin glowing.

The eyes are constantly moving creating heat. Try using slices of cucumber to cool the area and calm the skin. Get plenty of rest. Allowing your body to rejuvenate itself through sleep can alleviate a number of problems. So, it's okay to hit the snooze every now and then. If you are suspicious of a vitamin deficiency or are feeling irregularly fatigued, see a general practitioner. They will be able to help diagnose if your dark circles are a sign of a larger problem. There are certain medical procedures that can be done as well, but keep this as a last resort. There will most likely be down time and possible side effects from these procedures.
