Stylists Share Their Top Tips for Fighting Frizz

Summer may be over, but fall and winter bring their own set of frizz-fighting challenges. Indoor heat can leave strands dry, and styling with hot tools can weaken the cuticle—both of which leave hair prone to frizz. And let’s not forget, there are still plenty of humid, rainy days left on the calendar.

One of the best frizz fighters? Argan oil. Featured in every Moroccanoil product, argan oil is packed with essential fatty acids that help seal the cuticle, which keeps dry hair from soaking up the moisture in the air (and then frizzing)

But argan oil is far from the only weapon in your frizz-fighting arsenal. Read on for more frizz-busting tips from top stylists, broken down by hair type.

For Straight Hair

Got frizzy, straight hair? Your blowout technique could be to blame. “My clients don’t spend as much time on their own blowouts as I do when I style their hair, so they usually don’t close the cuticle in an ideal way,” says Kelli Fahey, Moroccanoil Artistic Team Member. “This can cause hair to end up frizzing.”

Using the right styling products can also make a difference, Kelli says. “I teach them to use the Hydrating Styling Cream before and after they blow-dry, and they fall in love with the results.”

On those humid, rainy days, Moroccanoil Artistic Director Kevin Hughes has one big tip: Don’t touch your hair! “When humidity hits the air, there is a small amount of moisture that will sit on the strands. When you touch your hair or run your fingers through it, it spreads the moisture, which can result in excess frizz.”

For Curly Hair

For those with curly hair, fighting frizz starts with the right shampoo and conditioner. Moroccanoil Curl Enhancing Shampoo and Conditioner feature gentle, sulfate-free formulas with nourishing Abyssinian oil, to leave curls soft, smooth, and hydrated. Or try a co-wash like Curl Cleansing Conditioner. And once you step out of the shower, be sure to gently towel dry. “Blot it dry with a towel—don’t be rough with it!” says Kevin.

Want to wear your hair straight? Kelli recommends using Curl Defining Cream before you blow-dry—even though it’s usually used to define curls, it can also help create a smoother look for blowouts. “It has the ingredients and moisture that [curly hair] needs,” she says. “And if you leave the style in, your blowout ends up with different levels of wave each day.”

And use Moroccanoil Treatment to tame any frizz and flyaways that pop up throughout the day.

For Fine Hair

Many smoothing products can weigh down fine hair, so it’s crucial to look for lightweight formulations. Moroccanoil Treatment Light has all the smoothing, frizz-fighting benefits of the original, but is specifically designed for fine hair. Weightless Hydrating Mask is also designed for fine hair, and helps fight the dryness that leads to frizz.
